Founding & Early Innovation (1976–1989)

Enzo Biochem, Inc. was founded in 1976 by Dr. Elazar Rabbani with a vision to develop non-radioactive methods for detecting nucleic acids. At a time when radioactive isotopes were the primary tool for molecular biology, Enzo pioneered the use of chemically modified nucleotides as labels — a breakthrough that transformed the field.

In the early 1980s, Enzo developed some of the first non-isotopic nucleic acid labeling and detection systems, laying the foundation for modern molecular diagnostics. These innovations earned foundational patents that remain significant to the biotechnology industry.

Growth & Diversification (1990–2004)

Through the 1990s, Enzo expanded its product portfolio and capabilities through strategic acquisitions and internal development:

  • Acquired Axxora LLC, establishing a global platform for sourcing specialty research reagents from partner suppliers
  • Launched the FLUOR DE LYS fluorometric assay platform for HDAC and sirtuin activity measurement
  • Developed the SCREEN-WELL compound library series for drug discovery screening
  • Expanded into immunoassay development with a growing range of ELISA kits for biomarker quantification
  • Built a clinical reference laboratory (Enzo Clinical Labs) serving the New York metropolitan area

Modern Era & Transformation (2005–Present)

In the 2000s and 2010s, Enzo Life Sciences refocused on its core strengths in life science products and services:

  • Established ISO 13485-certified manufacturing for diagnostic and research-grade products
  • Launched comprehensive product lines in apoptosis, autophagy, epigenetics, and oxidative stress
  • Expanded OEM and custom manufacturing services for pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies
  • Developed the SENTINEL molecular beacon technology platform for real-time nucleic acid detection
  • Introduced the AMPIVIEW RNA detection system for spatial gene expression analysis
  • Built a global distribution network serving researchers in over 100 countries

Looking Forward

Today, Enzo Life Sciences continues to innovate at the intersection of research tools, diagnostics, and drug discovery services. With over 30,000 products, a robust intellectual property portfolio, and deep scientific expertise, we remain committed to enabling researchers to make discoveries that improve human health.
